Educators understand and apply knowledge of student growth and development.

Grade 7

During my few months teaching grade 7, we focused on the concept of a growth mindset and its importance in our development as learners.

This is a preview of the Ted talk we watched as a class.

After we discussed the growth mindset, we did numerous activities, including a G.R.I.T comic. To track our growth, we used S.M.A.R.T. goals, and each student had the opportunity to use them as a reference point. We continued to add to these S.M.A.R.T. goals and create new ones while referencing the old ones.

This is the yearly sheet, and there were term sheets used.

Practicum Learnings

During my last practicum, one of my professors challenged me to focus on getting students to dig deeper into the content that is being learned. My focus was to introduce the basics of a topic and allow the students to explore that topic in a more focused area.

For example, we did a small Social Studies unit on Deforestation. We did an overview of the negative and positive effects of deforestation in Canada. We also did a day on how deforestation affects our first peoples.

After, they were given an overview and were assigned to dig deeper into a topic of choice. (relevant to deforestation) They created a poster. Here is an example of one.
