Educators demonstrate a broad knowledge base and an understanding of areas they teach.
During my practicum in a grade 5/6 split, I focused on emotional/social learning on top of the other subjects being taught. As a class we focused on the mentality of “The Giving Tree” first the classic book by Shel Silverstein and then The Giving Tree, by Leah Darion. Although, I feel somewhat knowledgable about the First People’s in the North, I knew very little about the Metis people. Our first class we focused on the reading the stories and the 12 core values of the Metis people. Our class had a great discussion about where we saw these values in the book and spent time defining them.
Our second class we focused on the Metis style of painting/coloring and talking about how different cultures have artistic styles. Overall it was a really neat learning experience for the students (I think) and myself.
